Notes the appointment of Charles Sherrington to a committee (following resignation of E.H. Starling) ‘to inquire what degree of colour-blindness or defective for of vision in persons holding responsible positions at sea causes them to be incompetent to discharge their duties, and to advise them whether any... alterations are desirable in the Board of Trade sight tests at present in force’. Highlights conclusions of the committee - that there is no evidence of casualties from colour-blindness, but that more stringent tests need to be introduced, especially regarding the perception of lights at night. Notes the committee’s recommendation of the introduction of a ‘lantern test’ to this end.
