This is a thick section (stained with haematoxylin and eosin) through the pineal gland, and adjacent parts of a human brain. The tip of the pineal gland is seen to the left (A). Issuing from it is a fine nerve, the pineal nerve (B), which can be followed for some distance. It runs back in the floor of the great cerebral vein (C) towards a massive arachnoid granulation (D) which projects up from the upper surface of the cerebellum (E). The arachnoid granulation is closely related to the termination of the great cerebral vein where the latter opens into the straight sinus (F) in the tentorium cerebelli (G). The significance and ultimate connexions of the pineal nerve are still quite unknown. The photograph is at a magnification of X 12.
