Orientation of Section: transverse
Number of Sections: 1
Part of Body: occipital lobe, cerebral hemisphere
Description

Transverse section through the occipital lobe of the cerebral hemisphere. The visual cortex is clearly demarcated by the thin layer of medullated fibres which extends throughout it. This layer is termed the "white line of Gennari", and, because of it, the visual cortex is also called the area striata of the cortex. The sulcus extending into the middle of the visual cortex is the post-calcarine sulcus.
