Stained with: cresyl violet
Description

Coronal section through one cerebral hemisphere, stained with Cresyl Violet. The section should be studied with a hand-lens. Notice the caudate nucleus (Cd) and the thalamus (Th) in the floor of the lateral ventricle (Lat). Above is the corpus callosum (CC) and medially the body of the fornix (F). Notice also the insula (Ins) and the deep lateral fissure of Sylvius (L). Examine closely the lateral geniculate body (G) and observe that it is composed of a number of distinct cell layers. The hippocampus (H) and dental gyrus (D) are well stained, and their essential cortical nature is quite evident. At the medial margin of the descending horn of the lateral ventricle is the fimbria (Fi), and above this the choroid plexus can be seen projecting through the choroid fissure into the cavity of the descending horn.
