Description

Coronal section of the cerebral hemispheres of a human brain, at the level of the interventricular foramen of Monro (indicated by arrows). The foramen leads from the third ventricle in the median plane to the lateral ventricles on either side. Observe the following structures and their general relationship: - CC. Corpus callosum; S1. Septum lucidum (note its bilaminar composition); F’. Body of the fornix; F’’. Descending columns of the fornix on their way down to the mammillary bodies; Cd. Head of caudate nucleus (ventrolateral to which is the anterior part of the internal capsule); P. Putamen; G. Globus pallidus; Cl. Claustrum; I. Insula; S. Sylvian fissure (lateral sulcus); Ot. Optic tract; Am. Amygdaloid nucleus. Look closely at the cerebral cortex and note its laminated structure.
