Description

A low-power view of a section through the lumbar region of a human spinal cord, stained by a silver method. Note the sensory (A) and motor (B) roots cut across, the posterior horn (C), anterior horn (D) with large motor nerve cells, the postero-median, septum (E), the antero-median fissure (F), the grey commissure (G) and the anterior or white commissure (H). At the tip of the posterior horn is a lightly-staining area, the substantia gelatinosa (J). The photograph is at a magnification of X 13.
