Part of Body: spinal cord, l4, th1, th3
Orientation of Section: transverse
Number of Sections: 3
Pathology: partial spinal cord injury
Description

Section of the spinal cord (at levels Th.1, Th.3, and L.4) showing bilateral degeneration of the crossed and direct pyramidal tracts. The degeneration has left standing out rather conspicuously the dorsal spino-cerebellar tract, which appears as a well-stained crescent superficial to the crossed pyramidal tract. The degeneration was probably due to a partial spinal cord injury in the lower cervical region, and it would lead to a paralysis affecting the voluntary movements of both lower limbs. There would also be spasticity of the muscles of the lower limbs, exaggerated tendon reflexes, and an extensor plantar reflex (Babinski's sign).
