Part of Body: medulla
Orientation of Section: transverse
Number of Sections: 1
Description

Section through the medulla at the level of the middle of the olivary nucleus (Ol). Note how this nucleus raises up a surface eminence, the olivary eminence. Dorsally are the gracile (Gr) and cuneate nuclei (Cu) from which arcuate fibres (Arc) stream ventrally and then medially across the mid-line, to form the medial fillet (Mf) of the opposite side. Capping the cuneate nucleus is the terminal part of the fasciculus cuneatus (Fc). Lateral to the cuneate nucleus is a small patch of grey matter, the accessory cuneate nucleus (Acc), which relays proprioceptive impulses from the neck region to the cerebellum. Note also the spinal tract (Sp) and nucleus (V) of the trigeminal nerve, the dorsal (Scd) and ventral (Scv) spino-cerebellar tracts, the pyramids (P) and the arcuate nuclei (Na).
