'There were battles for Joe to fight, in silence, within himself. And outside the struggle of learning to walk had begun. Learning like a child, step by step. And with work to do, there was no time for pity.Joe wasn't alone. In other hospitals the same sort of spirit existed. It was work all the time. You couldn't give up. A man completely paralysed from the waist down wasn't allowed to lie in bed and die. If there were just six muscles left in his body, he could be trained to stand upright without support, and to do the essential things for himself.
Unlike Joe who would have artificial legs to walk on, these men had to overdevelop what was left of their own bodies.
This hospital at Stoke Mandeville specialised in the treatment of paralysis. The results achieved there gave new hope to doctors and paraplegic patients throughout the world.
A network of pensions hospitals grew up all over the country. Rookwood in Wales. Edenhall in Scotland. Chapel Allerton in Leeds. Dunstan Hill on Tyneside. And many others.'
